Dr John Estens is an orthopaedic surgeon with sub-speciality training in foot and ankle surgery.

Dr Estens grew up on a farm in north-west NSW. He obtained a Bachelor of Medical Science at Sydney University, and a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery at University of Queensland. He completed his orthopaedic training in the Hunter New England network and achieved Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons in Jan 2016.

Dr Estens completed a local fellowship in foot and ankle surgery with Drs James O’Sullivan, David Nicholson and Pankaj Rao. He then travelled to Bordeaux, France to complete a GRECMIP fellowship in minimally invasive and percutaneous foot and ankle surgery at Hospital Pellegrin, under the guidance of Dr Olivier Laff enêtre. Lastly, he has undertaken a period of additional training at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Adelaide, in paediatric orthopaedics.

Dr Estens provides honest and individualised advice. His areas of interest include lower limb surgery, foot and ankle surgery, adult and paediatric trauma and clinical education. His training in minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery is designed to cause less tissue disturbance, better patient outcomes and a shorter hospital stay.

Dr Estens is a VMO at Maitland Public Hospital and has begun consulting at East Maitland and operating at Maitland Private Hospital.
